Carl Appen is a Sponsorships Manager with Civic News Company. As part of the Earned Revenue Department, he works to grow advertising and non-philanthropic funding programs. With a background in both journalism and business development.

Carl has spent his career building sustainable models for local news. Prior to joining Civic News, Carl was Director of Content & Development at Appen Media Group. In that role he led newsroom, product and audience operations for the family-owned publisher. During his tenure the company built its reader revenue program; acquired or launched publications in new markets; and installed support networks between neighboring newsrooms. Carl is particularly passionate about open records access, visual journalism and helping support the next generation of local reporters. When he’s not working you can find Carl in the kitchen, garden or backcountry.
